Abbreviations US

st – stitch
chsp – chain-space

slst – slip stitch
sc – single crochet
hdc – half double crochet
dc – double crochet
tr – treble crochet¨
fpdc – front post double crochet

beg – beginning
dc2tog – double crochet 2 together over two stitches
sc2tog – single crochet 2 together over two stitches
V-st – v-stitch; (1 dc, ch2, 1 dc) in the same stitch.

pop
 – popcorn; 5 dc’s in the same st/chsp, remove loop from hook, place hook in the first dc, put loop back on the hook, pull through, ch1 to close the st. Ch1 does not count as a st.

x-dc – sk one st (pic 1), dc in next st (pic 2), go back and make a dc in the skipped st in front of the first dc. For the next pair of X-dc’s, sk one unworked st, make your first dc, and then make your second dc in the skipped stitch. You only make one dc in each st.

Good to know
  • Instructions between *-* are repeated around, unless indicated otherwise.
  • Instructions between (-) in a round are made in the same st/chsp.
  • Total number of stitches can be found between (-) at the end of the round.
  • Make sure you don’t miss the first stitch after a corner (aka hidden stitch).
  • First stitch of the round is replaced with chains; sc = ch1, hdc = ch2, dc = ch3, tr = ch4.

Joining

Fold in the corners like the picture below.

Place markers through both sides of the tips of the corners, count 38 stitches and put markers in the next stitch (through both sides). If you want a smaller/bigger opening for the arm, adjust where you place the markers.

Slipstitch together in the back loops from the outside of the cocoon cardigan. You can join in any way you want or sew the sides together. But I like the little ridge that the slst in back loops makes.

Crochet around the body opening

Begin where you have joined the sides.

1. *1 dc in first chsp, dc2tog (one leg in each chsp), 1 dc in second chsp. 1 dc in each st to next chsp.* Rep *-* one time. End with a slst in 3rd ch of beg 3.
2. *1 dc, 1 fpdc in next st*, rep *-* around. End with a slst in 3rd ch of beg 3.
3. *1 dc, 1 fpdc in fpdc*, rep *-* around. End with a slst in 3rd ch of beg 3.
4-5. Repeat round 3.
6. Ch1, *10 sc, sc2tog*, rep *-* around. End with a slst in first sc (won’t be even).
7. Ch1, continue with 1 sc in each st around. End with a slst in first sc.

Cut yarn, secure ends.

Crochet arms

Begin where you have joined the sides.

1-2. 1 dc in each st around. End with a slst in 3rd ch of beg 3.
3. Ch2, 1 dc in next st (=dc2tog), *1 dc in each of next 5 sts, dc2tog over next 2 sts*, rep *-* around. End with a slst in first dc (won’t be even).
4. Repeat round 2.
5. Repeat round 3.
6-7. Repeat round 2.
8. Repeat round 3.
9. Repeat round 2.
10. Crochet in back loops. 1 sc in each st around. End with a slst in first sc.

Cut yarn, secure ends. Don’t forget to close the little hole under the arm. Repeat for the second arm.
