Grape Hyacinth square

Yarn: Scheepjes Catona, colors are specified in the color chart below
Hook-size: 3 mm
Size square:
appr. 15*15 cm
Extra: If you want to attach the square to a ring, I used a 22 cm ring from Virknålar och tillbehör

Good to know
  • Instructions between *-* is repeated around or the number of times given. 
  • Instructions between (-) is made in the same st/chsp.
  •  Instructions between [-] is repeated a number of times within a round.
  • First stitch in a round is made as a standing stitch or with ch as follow; ch1 = 1 sc, ch2 = 1 hdc, ch3 = 1 dc and so on.
  • Do NOT skip the stitch behind the front post stitches unless you’re told to in that round.
Abbreviations US

ch – chain
chsp – chainspace
st- stitch
slst – slipstitch
sc – single crochet
hdc – half double crochet
dc – double crochet
BLO – back loops only

fpsc – front post single crochet
fpdc – front post double crochet
fptr – front post treble crochet

fpdc2tog – front post double crochet 2 together, one leg around each given stitch.
fptr2tog – front post treble crochet 2 together, one leg around each given stitch.
pop – 5 dc in the same st/chsp, remove loop from hook, insert hook in first dc, put loop back on hook and pull through, ch1 to close the stitch (ch1 does NOT count as a stitch).

Pattern

(A). Ch6, slst in first ch to make a ring.

1.  Ch1, *1 sc, ch4*, repeat *-* 6 times. End with a slst in first sc.
(6 sc, 6 ch4-sp)

2. (B) *pop in chsp, ch2, skip sc*, repeat *-* around. End with a slst in top of first pop.
(6 pop, 6 ch2-sp)

3. (A) *1 sc in chsp, ch5, skip pop*, repeat *-* around. End with a slst in first sc. (6 sc, 6 ch5-sp)

4. (C) *(pop, ch2, pop) in chsp, ch2, skip sc*, repeat *-* around. End with a slst in top of first pop.
(12 pop, 12 ch2-sp)

5. (A) *1 sc in chsp, ch5, skip pop*, repeat *-* around. End with a slst in first sc. (12 sc, 12 ch5-sp)

6. (D) *(pop, ch2, pop) in chsp, ch2, skip sc*, repeat *-* around. End with a slst in top of first pop.
(24 pop, 24 ch2-sp)

7. (A) *1 sc in chsp, ch5, skip pop*, repeat *-* around. End with a slst in first sc. (24 sc, 24 ch5-sp)

8. Ch1, *3 sc in chsp, 3 sc in next chsp, 3 sc in next chsp, 3 hdc in next chsp, (2 dc, ch2, 2 dc) in next chsp, 3 hdc in next chsp*, repeat *-* around. End with a slst in first sc.
(9 sc, 6 hdc, 4 dc / side between the corner-chsp)

9. Ch1, continue with 1 sc in each st around, in corner-chsp make (1 sc, ch3, 1 sc). End with a slst in first sc.
(21 sc / side)

10. (C) Begin in the first st on a side.
*2 sc in BLO, fpdc2tog around the two dc’s on round 8, 17 sc in BLO, fpdc2tog around the two dc’s on round 8, 2 sc in BLO, (1 sc, ch2, 1 sc) in corner-chsp*, repeat *-* around. End with a slst in first sc.
(23 sc, 2 fpdc2tog / side)

11. (A) Begin in a corner-chsp,
*(1 sc, ch2, 1 sc) in corner-chsp, 8 sc in BLO, [1 fptr around sc on round 7, 3 sc in BLO], repeat [-] 4 times, 5 sc in BLO*, repeat *-* around. End with a slst in first sc.
(27 sc, 4 fptr / side)

12. (B) Begin in a corner-chsp,
*(1 sc, ch2, 1 sc) in corner-chsp, 5 sc in BLO, 1 fpdc around the fpdc2tog on round 10, 4 sc in BLO, [skip fptr, 3 sc in BLO], repeat [-] 4 times, 1 sc in BLO, 1 fpdc around the fpdc2tog on round 10, 5 sc in BLO*, repeat *-* aruond. End with a slst in first sc.
(29 sc, 2 fpdc / side)

13. (A) Begin in a corner-chsp,
*(1 sc, ch2, 1 sc) in corner-chsp, 6 sc in BLO, skip fpdc, 5 sc in BLO, fptr2tog around fptr 1 and fptr 2 on round 11, sk 2 sts, 2 sc in BLO, fptr2tog around fptr 2 and fptr 3 on round 11, skip 1 st, 2 sc in BLO, fptr2tog around fptr 3 and fptr 4 on round 11, 5 sc in BLO, skip fpdc, 6 sc in BLO*, repeat *-* aruond. End with a slst in first sc.
(28 sc, 3 fptr2tog / side)

14. Ch1, *(1 sc, ch2, 1 sc) in corner-chsp, 12 sc, 1 fpsc around fptr2tog, 2 sc, 1 fpsc around fptr2tog, 2 sc, 1 fpsc around fptr2tog, 12 sc*, repeat *-* aruond. End with a slst in first sc.
(30 sc, 3 fpsc / side)

If you want to attach the square to a ring (my ring was 22 cm across) crochet round 14 as below; 

14. *1 sc in corner-chsp, ch1, hold the ring behind the square and crochet 1 sc in corner-chsp (this traps the ring inside the ch1-sp), 12 sc, 1 fpsc around fptr2tog, 2 sc, 1 fpsc around fptr2tog, 2 sc, 1 fpsc around fptr2tog, 12 sc*, repeat *-* around. End with a slst in first sc.

Cut the yarn and secure all your ends. I recommend that you block your square (not necessary if you attached it to a ring) to make the design justice.
